The 5 Calm Safety Checks

Start here. Move gently. Progress beats perfection.

1

Clear the "Everyday Path"

This is the route used most often—especially at night.

  • Walk: bedroom → bathroom → kitchen
  • Remove trip hazards: loose rugs, curled corners, cords, clutter, shoes, bags
  • Keep the main walkway wide, predictable, and unobstructed
2

Add Soft Nighttime Lighting (Fast Win)

Falls often happen in low light.

  • Confirm a reachable bedside light
  • Create a softly lit path from bed to bathroom
  • Motion-sensor lights work well and don't require reminders or switches
3

Bathroom: Steady Feet + Easy Reach

Water and rushing don't mix.

  • Add a non-slip surface in or near the shower/tub
  • Keep a towel within easy reach before stepping out
  • Keep floors clear—no bins, laundry piles, or loose items
4

Stairs & Steps: Hand + Light + Clear

Stairs are not storage.

  • Confirm a secure handrail
  • Improve lighting so every step is clearly visible
  • Keep steps completely clear—nothing lives here
5

Emergency Basics (Calm Readiness)

Not fear. Just preparedness.

  • Choose one visible "home base" for emergency contacts and the home address
  • Note where the medication list is kept
  • Keep a flashlight easy to reach

If You Only Do One Thing Today

Add soft nighttime lighting between the bed and the bathroom.

It reduces falls, doesn't feel intrusive, and helps immediately.
